Door County Lighthouse
Sturgeon Bay Bridge

is a peninsula and series of islands comprising the "thumb" of Wisconsin. With Lake Michigan on one side, Green Bay waters on the other and "Death's Door" at the tip, Door County is an emerald jewel surrounded by vibrant blue waters. Door County is known for its cherry and apple orchards, beautiful natural setting, boating and fishing, shipbuilding and maritime history and the arts. The county has more lighthouses (10) and more miles of coastline (more than 300) than any other county in the United States. There are wineries and fruit stands to visit, many places to explore on bicycles, boating and swimming, fishing and sailing charters to experience the waters, five state parks and many options for entertainment.

For more information on Door County, visit the Door County Compass Magazine or venture to the Door County Chamber of Commerce Visitor & Convention Bureau web site here.

The county is dotted with little towns and villages all the way up the peninsula. Each area is approximately 5 to 10 miles apart and has a charming name such as Fish Creek, Egg Harbor or Sturgeon Bay. Each town or village has its own series of shops, restaurants, lodges, beaches, activities and entertainment featuring its own unique flavors. The entire county is easily driveable in a day. From Fish Creek, the center of the county, it's a 30-minute drive to the tip of the peninsula and a 20-minute drive south to Sturgeon Bay, the county's largest (but still quaint) city. At the tip of the peninsula you can catch a car ferry over to Washington Island and then take another boat to Rock Island. Throughout the peninsula there are many lighthouses you can see and some you can tour.

Fish Creek Beach
Fish Creek Sunset

The village of Fish Creek is centrally located in the county. Fish Creek has its back to the glacier-carved limestone bluffs and its face to Green Bay waters. It is a charming little village full of history. Visit the Fish Creek Historical Society for more information on historical walks. The port originally settled for lumber is now lined with picturesque marinas. There are many unique shops, restaurants and lodges both in the main village and in the surrounding areas. In the middle of the town is the Fish Creek beach with a lawn area, playground and sandy beachfront. You also can find the entrance to Peninsula State Park, often ranked the state's top state park, which has beaches, play areas, bicycle trails, hiking trails, boating rentals, camping, a lookout tower, a golf course and more.

For more information on Fish Creek, visit the Fish Creek Civic Association web site here.

The Schooner FRIENDLY sails three times daily from Fish Creek at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and at sunset. For information about rates, go here.
